TWINKLING lights and botanical beauty encouraged people to show their true festive spirit this Christmas.

Lee Marsden’s Christmas display in Fratley Avenue, Farm Cove, moved people to open their wallets and donate $7520 to Hospice South Auckland.

A Place Where I Can Be Me!
Trish Davies has been coming to Day Stay for nearly a year. A very outgoing bubbly person, Trish asked her nurse if there was anything she could do to get away from home during the day to give both herself and her husband a break. The Hospice Day Stay programme was the answer.

Pakuranga Country Club Charity Golf Day
Pakuranga Country Club reports: ” That the Hospice South Auckland charity event was staged for the 18th year on Friday 2nd October 2009 and this year raised a record $21,760.00.

The Wine Makers Lunch held on Sunday 18th October at Alexandra Park was again well supported with 180 people attending.
Hospice Revamps Day Care Facility
Hospice South Auckland is extending its Day Stay facility and from the New Year will provide ambulatory care services at Totara Lodge in Manurewa.
Payroll Giving - A New Way to Give
The Government continues to try to encourage a culture of generosity in New Zealand, and has introduced a new payroll giving scheme, due to take effect early next year.
Christmas Cheer for Hospice
Lee Marsden, volunteer at Hospice will again be supporting Hospice at Christmas with her decorated garden which is a joy for all to see, Mums, Dads, Aunts, Uncles, Grandparent and most of all children of all ages.

Fundraising Volunteers!
Volunteers recently helped with raising $5,000 on World Hospice Day on October 10th along with raising money from raffle tickets at two recent events.
BNZ ‘Closed for Good’
On 4th November 2009 BNZ staff all around the country closed shop for the day to help charities.
KidsCan StandTall
On Nov 6th, approximately 30 Year 7 children from KidsCan StandTall programme volunteered at our Hospice as a way of giving back to their local community.

Each year Hospice South Auckland has it’s Christmas Remembrance Trees in various sites around South/South East Auckland throughout December.
Bereavement Service Volunteers Required
Emotional support is offered to families following the death of a love one. Contact is generally made by phone.

Wine Makers Lunch Sep09
Last year the Rotary Club of Otahuhu held a Winemakers tapas style lunch and auction which raised $12,000 for Hospice South Auckland. This event was well supported and the feedback very positive with requests to organise another fundraiser lunch in October 2009.
Valerie Vili Rose Garden
Turning the soil to plant a (golden-yellow) rose named in her honour, reigning Olympic champion Valerie Vili recently launched a special campaign to help Hospice South Auckland continue to deliver a very high standard of care to approximately 700 patients and families in its area each year.
Farmers Manukau Fundraising
We are delighted that Farmers Manukau chose Hospice South Auckland as their charity to commemorate their 100 years birthday celebrations.
Challenging Events
On Daffodil Day 2009, Papakura resident Latalia Bent shaved her head to raise funds in honour of her step­father Collin Selman, who passed away at Hospice South Auckland in May of this year.
Karaka Habourside House
United to Help Hospice. KARAKA Harbourside’s “Hospice Job” is taking shape nicely, thanks to a community effort involving developers, contractors, construction workers and the Counties Manukau Freemasons.
New Look Hospice Shops
Our shop refurbishment program kicked off in July with the renovation of our retail store at School Corner, Papatoetoe.

Fashion and all that Jazz
Ayrlies Garden a superb venue for “Fashion and all that Jazz” On a near-perfect late summer’s day we were delighted to see such a good turn out of Hospice Supporters for the first ever “Fashion and all that Jazz” Garden Party at Ayrlies Garden on March 22nd. It was also good to be able to welcome Hospice New Zealand patron Maggie Barry along for the day.

As I sit here in my surgery office, looking out over the quiet lush geen suburban ‘old’ Howick with its clear blue sky and occasional puff of summer’s cumulus cloud drifting by, it seems too hard to believe that the world is heading into such unprecendented turmoil.

The Big Spring Clean
At the time that I am writing this spring seems as far off and unlikely as a Saharan heat wave! We are stuck in the middle of one of the wettest spells that I can remember and last night I slept with my electric blanket on all night (don’t tell my mum as she would put me over her knee!).

The summer of 2007 – 2008 has come and gone with great rapidity. The highlight for me was my two week holiday in the Bay of Islands which reached a climax on my last afternoon away when I landed the biggest snapper of my fishing career.

Reflections from the HR Desk
Three years ago I joined Hospice South Auckland to take on the new role of Human Resources Advisor. Coming from a background of 25 years practising as a Registered Nurse followed by 14 years in Human Resources management in the health sector, I believed I could offer the support required whilst my own experience of grief and loss added to my feeling of empathy with the philosophy of hospice.
