Memorable Moments at Hospice

When we hear the word Hospice we conjure up pictures of grief and sadness.

Undeniably this is often the case. However on a brighter note, Hospice has many happy times and indeed memorable occasions, in fact we had such an occasion on August 14th 2008.
Our story begins with a young devoted couple and their 8 month old son Mahara. George a dedicated rugby player and Lanietta his partner of 8 yrs.
George had been unwell for sometime and was, until early August, being lovingly cared for at home by Lanietta and her Mum. Sadly his condition became too complex to be cared for at home and it was decided he may benefit from a stay at the Hospice.
George arrived at Hospice very unwell but together with Lanietta and Mahara soon settled with Lanietta continuing to care for him with help from the nurses as required.
They were a devoted happy couple and obviously very popular despite the difficulties they were facing, and this was reflected by the endless stream of visitors George received, we had to restrict visiting as he became tired very easily.
George’s condition deteriorated on August 13th and despite knowing his long term prognosis both he and Lanietta were visibly upset. She as always kept vigil beside him.
August 14th brought a new day and a much brighter George along with the announcement they would like to get married.
What appeared to be an entire rugby team arrived and George was whisked away for a ‘boys’ morning whilst the Hospice staff went into action and a very excited Lanietta began organising. Its amazing what Hospice staff can arrange in 2 hours when the word Wedding is uttered. Cake, Celebrant, food, flowers, ring and dress all materialised and it was all go. Lanietta chose to wear a traditional cloak and looked beautiful as always, and it was with Mum and Mahara at her side and surrounded by many many family and friends that George and Lanietta became husband and wife. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house. This was truly a memorable moment for us all.
At this point Hospice staff withdrew and left family and friends to share this special day with this truly special young family.
Sadly George, Lanietta and Mahara only had a short time together as George lost his courageous battle with dignity surrounded by all who loved him only a few days later.
George and Lanietta were an inspiration to us all and we thank Lanietta for allowing us to share  their story.
