Volunteer Pets and Handlers
In August 2008 the Pets as Therapy Service welcomed 4 new dogs to the team.
We proudly acknowledge the contribution of two Cavalier King Charles, a Poodle and a Heading Terrier Cross. The dogs have been assessed by a professional assessor prior to being registered and rostered for regular visits to the Inpatient and Out Patient Units. We are extremely fortunate to have the support and expertise of Kay Williams a professional assessor/trainer who volunteers her services to Hospice. Kay resides in Waiheke Island. She is readily willing to visit Totara Lodge whenever we have a small group of dogs to be assessed. Pets as Therapy offer patients and families an opportunity for diversion and entertainment. When visiting on site they wear a yellow neck scarf displaying the hospice logo. We regard our special pets as assets to the diverse service provided by our team of dedicated volunteers. I would like to acknowledge all other visiting dogs that have long been associated with Hospice South Auckland, including Anna with Flash (see photo). Anna joined the Volunteer Service in June 2006. In addition to being committed to the Pets as Therapy service, Anna is a volunteer driver who takes patients to Auckland, Middlemore or Greenlane hospitals for treatment. Thanks to people like Anna, patients living in the community benefit from attending our Day Stay programme that offers social and therapeutic diversion. Chris Keeling Volunteer Manager
