From the Chief Executive’s desk
Last November the Charities Commission published a benchmark survey into the level of public trust and confidence in the New Zealand charitable sector.
The Research showed that a very high proportion of donors (84%) have greater trust and confidence in charities that are open about how they use their resources. The most influential characteristic in donors deciding to support a charity was that ‘they make a positive difference to the matters they address’ (41%), and ‘they ensure a reasonable proportion of donations get to the end cause’ (18%). At Hospice South Auckland we are constantly running campaigns to attract donations and I would like to let our readers know that you may wish to refer to our entry on the Charities Register, to remind you of our status as a registered charity. If you go to the Charities Commission website: http://www.register.charities.govt.nz/CharitiesRegister/CharitySummary.aspx?id=d1aca3eb-3c8a-dc11-98a0-0015c5f3da29 and enter our name you will see our unique registration number and full details. We have also listed the link on our website to let our supporters know they can find information about us there, and that we meet the Charities Act’s criteria. May I take this opportunity to thank all our supporters for your contribution to Hospice in 2009. This has been a particularly challenging year as the recession affected all of our donors. The New Zealand economy has now turned the corner and we are in a transition stage so let’s not dwell on the past but look to the future and think about the changes that we will need to make to ensure that we grow our economy and our future prospects. It is human nature to be resistant to change and we all tend to want to go back to the way it was. The world is a now a different place and while we need to acknowledge where we have been, it is now time to think about change and restoring trust in the New Zealand economy. I wish you and your families a safe and enjoyable Festive Season. Gary Sturgess
