Dr James Jap's Story

Hi, I'm Dr. James Jap, and I've been the Registrar at Hospice South Auckland since April of this year. I will complete my specialist training in Palliative Care later this year.

I am New Zealand Chinese in ethnic origin. I was born in Wanganui, and grew up in Napier. I graduated from Otago Medical School at the end of 1999 and I have worked in numerous locations throughout New Zealand and Australia, before settling in Auckland.

I believe that Palliative Care should be accessible for all people who need it, while respecting their culture and personal wishes. I am keen on being involved in Palliative Care education and workforce development. My own interest in Palliative Care started when I was a fourth year medical student and I am keen to encourage the same interest in the next generations of my future colleagues.

Working in Palliative Care I feel privileged to be able to help patients and their families in what may be their most difficult times, i.e. the end of life. I would like to promote the idea that when a person has limited time left, that their time becomes much more precious. Please give that person's time the appropriate respect that it deserves.

In Palliative Care, we may not save life, but we do save quality of life, which can be just as important, if not more so.

Come and join us in making a difference.

Dr James Jap
Registrar
