Hospice Volunteer Reaches Milestone

1000 Patients Transported. John Bennetts is a familiar face around Hospice South Auckland. He is one of our valuable volunteers who has been quietly helping provide services to our patients for many years.

John first came into contact with us when his father-in-law was cared for by Hospice in 1999. When he "retired" he offered his services and started by driving the van collecting donations for Hospice Shops and moving goods between them. Suffering a fall at home, he found he could no longer do the heavier work needed.

John has been providing transport for patients since 2005. In that time, he has transported over 1000 patients.

The trips can be varied. One day he may take patients to Auckland Hospital for treatment or specialist appointments. Another day, he may bring patients to Hospice's Day Stay program. Between trips, he can also be found at the computer providing a valuable clerical role to the Volunteer Co-ordinator.

John's philosophy about why he volunteers is simple, "What you take out of life, you give back as you are able." He says that he has never made as many friends as he has, since volunteering with Hospice.
"Everyone is special and unique", he says. "There is always something you can give and you receive so much back. It really is something that I look forward to each day."

Hospice South Auckland values our volunteers. As this newsletter coincides with Volunteering Week, we say a special thank you to John and all our volunteers.
